A New Diet

I haven't been blogging lately because I felt it was a little pointless and hopeless. Of course, I wanted my blog to be an instant sensation that everyone would follow. That didn't happen and that's ok. I blame it on Julie and Julia.  :)

I've been trying to follow a more precise diet than I had winter term.

  • I try to focus on food that are natural and non-processed.
  • I shop the outer edge of the grocery store, with a lot of concentration on produce and fruit and a little on meat. I don't really like to eat meat sometimes, excluding bacon, of course. :P
  • I am trying to cut grains out of my diet, but that is hard to do after 21 years of the typical American diet. The compulsion to remove grains is stimulated by this post at Mark's Daily Apple.
  • Sugar is one of my main weaknesses, but I am slowly gaining a foothold over it and don't need to consume sugar on a daily basis.
  • Avoiding coffee, mainly because Rick says that's a bad habit, it costs a lot of money and is usually packed with sugar.
As a result, since there is less food that I allow myself to buy, I spend less money. I mainly consume eggs, salad  and some casserole like thing I decide to whip with meat and veggies in it.

My favorite salad nowadays is something like this:
  • A dark green leaf lettuce
  • A handful of raw cashews
  • A handful of shelled sunflower seeds
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Pickled beets
  • Mushrooms
  • Or A few avocado slices
  • Or Hard boiled egg slices
  • Or Bacon
  • Shredded cheese or crumbled feta cheese
  • Olive oil and balsamic vinegar mixed together as the dressing, usually less than a teaspoon.
This salad appeals to my taste buds like something magical! When I go visit Rick I feel a little incomplete because I don't get to eat my customary salad. :P

So there has been a lot of trial and error with my diet, but I feel like I am in a good place now, though I am still ironing out some things, like upping the amount of protein and fiber I consume. The important thing is I don't feel tired all the time now!

  1. Hi Sierra!

I love the sounds of your salad! I'm hoping to have lots of lettuce come up in the garden so you can enjoy tons of salad over the summer. Of course, you will have to beat the rabbits, antelope and deer to it :-)

I'm so glad that you are feeling less tired. That is certainly a nice thing about eating less processed food and knowing exactly what you are putting in your mouth.

  2. Oh, yes, what we eat has such a profound effect on how we feel! One thing I have learned is that everybody (Every Body) is different. What might agree with one person might not agree with another. What one person would thrive on could cause illness in someone else. It is so important to eat Real Food, like you say, around the outside edges of the supermarket. You will learn so much in this quest for good health! I do not stay away from whole grains, but I do prepare mine carefully with soaking and fermentation. We eat some meat, but not a lot, and I go for grass-fed and home grown over factory meat. We are able to keep a garden and milk goats, which really helps. And I'm able to trade extra milk for farm-fresh eggs, which is so nice. Bless you and good luck in your search!
